Introduction:

Khumani a green-fields open-cast iron ore mining project. The plant consist of a crushing, washing and screening plant, with jig beneficiation to process off-grade ore. Grading is done to split out lumpy, medium and fine products. IRITRON was sub-contracted by DRA to do the Archestra implementation on the project. IRITRON also played a mayor role in the Systems Engineering, Instrumentation Design and PLC Coding.

What was our brief for this project?

We were part of the team that did the Instrumentation and Control systems design, development and commissioning.

Which solution did we propose?

IRITRON played a mayor role in the following:

  • Instrumentation Design
  • Control System Design
  • PLC software (Allen- Bradley Control Logic PLC’s)
  • SCADA software (Wonderware Archestra System Platform 3.0)

IRITRON took full responsibility for the Wonderware Archestra SCADA development – Khumani was the first large System Platform 3.0 project WORLD WIDE. Our product turned out to be the Beta testing site for the project – We reported and documented more than 40 bugs in the software that were addressed by numerous hot-fixes, patches and service packs that were issued by Wonderware.

What was special about this project?

This was the first large Wonderware Archestra System Platform 3.0 project worldwide.

Where did the challenge lie?

In managing and resolving serious bugs in the development software.

What value did we add for the client?

The client is happy with a system which works very well and the team always found solutions to the problems which were encountered that only helped to increase the confidence of the client in the product and the company. IRITRON has a local office in the Northern Cape from where we will provide support to the client. Where necessary they can tap into the expertise in the Pretoria office. We have signed a of support contract with the client to provide future engineering support.

Which team did this project within IRITRON?

A team of dedicated engineers worked on the project; Johann Pienaar (System Engineering, PM, team leader), Jaco van Staden (SCADA) and Johan Joubert (PLC and Instrumentation Design) with Sam Frolich joining the team later.
